The Málaga Travel Guide

Picasso's birthplace turned Costa del Sol capital — rooftop bars, beach chiringuitos, and a castle above the port.

With Kids

Family Travel

Playa de la Malagueta is a 10-minute walk from the old town with calm swimming; the port aquarium and the Gibralfaro castle ramparts keep kids moving.

Together

Couples Travel

Sunset cava at a Calle Larios rooftop, a Picasso Museum morning, and espetos (sardine skewers) grilled over driftwood at an El Palo chiringuito.

On Your Own

Solo Travel

Compact, walkable, and safe — the Soho street-art district, tapas counters at Atarazanas Market, and easy day trips (Ronda, Nerja, Caminito del Rey) fill a week fast.

Food

What to Eat

  • Espetos. Sardines skewered and grilled over open fire on the beach — Málaga's signature, best at El Palo.
  • Fried boquerones. Crisp anchovies with lemon — the tapas default in every bar.
  • Porra antequerana. A thicker, garlickier cousin of gazpacho from nearby Antequera.
  • Sweet Málaga wine. Moscatel dessert wine poured from barrels at Antigua Casa de Guardia since 1840.

Transportation

Getting Around

Walkable center; local Cercanías trains run along the coast to Torremolinos and Fuengirola. The airport is 12 minutes by train from the center.

María Zambrano station puts Madrid 2.5 hours away by AVE. Rent a car only for white-village day trips (Ronda, Frigiliana).

Where to Base Yourself

Neighborhoods

  • Centro Histórico. Cathedral, Picasso Museum, tapas lanes — everything within 15 minutes on foot.
  • Soho. Street-art district between the center and port — galleries, brunch, craft beer.
  • La Malagueta. City beach strip — high-rises, chiringuitos, morning swims.
  • El Palo. Old fishing quarter east of town — the most authentic espetos on the coast.
